Rain, rain go away

Few things are less predictable than the weather, especially in New York City, it seems the weather can change on a dime! Here are three bad weather wardrobe warriors that should be at your disposable at all times!

1. The Umbrella: A trusty umbrella that is well constructed and functions correctly is worth its weight in gold when needed. When you make your purchase be sure to open it in the store and look at the construction. Don’t worry about bringing yourself any bad luck, because the only bad luck that will happen to you is when your umbrella breaks in a torrential downpour because it is not made well. Look for the supports that are attached to the canopy to be strong and sturdy – they should not wiggle or feel loose. The handle should be sturdy as well. Look for an umbrella with auto open and close feature, which closes the canopy with the same push of a button – great of getting into cars, cabs and entryways. Also think of having an umbrella wardrobe – a small one to carry in your bag at all times and a medium one for the days when you know you will have to fend off the drops. Remember golf sized umbrellas are for the golf course not the sidewalk! Think of getting black and brown options so you can coordinate with your outfits. Also a novelty umbrella in a fun pop color will always brighten your spirits in the dismal weather!

2. The Trench: The Trench coat is an essential piece of raingear that should be in everyone’s wardrobe. Chose one that gives you shape and doesn’t make you look boxy. The length should be at least to the knee or below the knee. If you plan on wearing the coat to work with slacks – below the knee is a better option. Chose a color that is neutral so you can coordinate it with different outfits such as black, grey, or light brown. Belted styles will provide you will enhance shape as you can tie them at the waist. Make sure to choose a style that is constructed of a water repellant fabric. Also, don’t only reach for your trench on rainy days, this item can work double duty as the perfect transitional piece of outwear between seasons when it’s not too hot or too cold.

3. The Wellie: The Wellington boot also sometimes referred to as galoshes have had a resurgence in the past couple of seasons, and why shouldn’t they?! They provide excellent protection against the elements and save your cute Miu Mius from the puddles! When you pick up a pair look for ones that fit high on the calf, but below the knee and are generally close fitting around the calf. You want to have room to tuck in your pants/jeans if needed, but you don’t want so much room that the sides of the boots flop together when you walk. This is another great chance to smile with your wardrobe when the weather has got you down. Choose a fun eye-catching style, don’t pick anything that will compete with your possible outfits, but definitely let a little bit of your personality shine through the clouds : ) And don’t forget to throw your shoes in your bag so you can change when you get to the office!
