Soccer Mom

Being a “soccer mom” is a lot of work, but it doesn’t mean you have to show it! You can look fashionable while juggling all aspects of your life. The last thing you want is to look like Lynette Scavo from Desperate Housewives!

Here at Planet Style Concierge, I’ve put together some great tips on how to be a stylish mom-on-the-go.

1. Always look good when you leave the house.
It takes as much time to throw on a nice pair of jeans and a great sweater as it does to put on a jump suit. You never know whom you might run into and looking fabulous will make you feel better about yourself.

2. Take a few moments each morning to put on some makeup.
Two extra minutes spent doing this will make a world of difference! You don’t have to apply a full face as if you are going to a party or a special event. Remember, lipstick or lip-gloss and mascara go a long way!

3. Get yourself a great tote bag.
A tote will help you carry things around and keep you organized. Purchase one in leather or in a nice fabric. Also, choose a tote that is neutral in color. I’ve listed some examples below:

Left: A marigold leather triangle available at BlueFly.com.
Right: A burgundy antiqued linen stripe bag available at Etsy.com.

4. Remember who you are.
Take a few moments each day to remember that you are more then just a soccer mom! Life isn’t always easy and children are sometimes difficult, but remember life is meant to be enjoyed so go out there and look and feel fabulous!

Spring Must Haves 2009

Even though there’s still a chill in the air, it’s time to start shopping for spring! Planet Style Concierge founder and fashion stylist Colin Megaro has his eyes in a few key items for work and play.

Chanel Rue Cambon Tote

It’s cute, witty, and great for running errands, going to the beach or even for throwing your work in.

Giles Deacon for Smythson

The art of writing has been lost in the computer age. This spring, why not pick up some of these note cards and send a friend or loved one a handwritten note? These cards are chic and very au courant.

YSL Leather Boot with Metal Heel

This is the ultimate shoe for spring! Wear these shoes with a pencil skirt, stove pipe pants or with your favorite pair of jeans. These shoes will spice up any outfit and make you the talk of the town!

Tibi Fall/Winter 2009

Russia in NY? Czars, winter and brocade are the words that come to mind after viewing Tibi’s fall/winter 2009 show last night. The collection reminded me of a frosty Russian night where you just throw a mink over an amazing jacquard coat. Under that coat would be one of Smilovic’s beautiful hand-beaded sheaths or maybe even her Snow Maiden Gown.

Down the runway came stunning royal blue blouses, asymmetrical crepe dresses, sequined bourgeois blazers, and ruffled riding coats. The colors were vivid, illuminating, and unexpected. This fall, it will no longer be about drab colors but rather regal and royal hues.

Tibi was definitely one of my favorite collections of the season. Thanks Smilovic for bringing Russia and all its treasures to the USA!

William Rast

Fresh from the show last night that included celebrities such as Paris and Nikki Hilton, Anna Wintour and JC Chavez I have to admit I am not impressed. Justin Timberlake and his William Rast team should stick to things they do well. Fashion certainly is not one of them. Their Fall/Winter 2009 Collection looked much like the Spring 2009 Collection but in a different venue. Roseland Ballroom was swapped out for the tents. Maybe shows like this in the tents are a comment on our current economic status?

The rock music was beating and the cameras were clicking as people took their seats. The lights dimmed and a collection came down the runway that looked as if it was pulled from an 80’s warehouse. I realize that vibe is back but the overly bedazzled, patched jeans and motorcycle jackets were just not on cue. Elongated shirts over jeans made the gentlemen look as if they had skirts on. The blazers were tailored well but looked a bit to rough for someone to actually wear. The women’s ultra mini high waisted skirts are not what I would have expected. They were far to short and the upside down sweetheart lines were not done well. The designs reminded me of people you see hoping out off their motorcycles or out of big rigs at truck stops. Maybe next year this team will come up with something worth adding to your wardrobe.

Looks for Less

Planet Style’s Guide for getting designer looks for less

How many times have you looked at a magazine or watching a runway show on tv and thought “I love that outfit”? Then you look at the prices attached and realize it is more then your weeks salary. Not to worry I have a few tips up my sleeve that will help you achieve that look for less.

#1. The looks you want should be the ones that fit into your lifestyle. Couture gowns are amazing but do you really have an event to wear them to? Instead find that perfect little black dress on the runway and then find one that has a similar feel for a lower cost. You can mix and match it with your wardrobe and it will never go out of style.

The Dress on the left is a Vivienne Westwood and we all know her designs are expensive. The right is a INC ¾ Sleeve Dress available at Macy’s for $80.00.

#2. Remember the designers are doing lines for less expensive stores. These days you can get McQueen and Lagerfeld at places like H & M and Target.

Both of these looks are McQ for Target. The Trench coat is offered at $79.99 and the Jumpsuit is offer at $59.99.

#3. When looking for a less expensive version you may have to compromise on the color or length but you can achieve the overall look. Take your less expensive look to the tailor to get that perfect runway fit.
The left is a David Jones collection piece priced at over $500.00. The right is a purple flapper dress priced at $82.00 (available at Bluefly.com)

#4. Do your research on the pieces that catch your attention. You can Google the designer and see what pops up as a less expensive version. If you are all about the name brands join sites like Shopbot.com or Gilt Groupe. They have daily sales on top name designer clothing and accessories. You are sure to find great deals that noone ever needs to know about!

Finally, as I always say you own a mirror for a reason. Use it before you leave the house.

New York Fashion Week

Hey Guy and Gals,

So NYFW is upon us. The lights are flashing, the celebs are out and the fashionistas are swarming.

Here are a few tips to make the week fun and as unstressful as possible.

1. Try to leave the house or office a few minutes early. We all know how 6th Avenue can be during these times of year.

2. Eat something on your way to your shows. You don't want to pass out but also you should never be seen eating in the tents. Last season I saw someone snacking during a show. Needless to say she has not been seen at shows since. If all else fails, swallow a bite or two in the bathroom.

3. Wear an outfit that can last all day. Toss a few accessories in your bag that will help you transition from day to evening. A scarf, earrings, perfume and different shoes won't weigh you down.

4. Fashion week is work but remember to try to have some fun. Fashion is meant to be enjoyed.

Finally...Remember you own a mirror for a reason. Use it before you leave to head out.

Time to Fly: How to look good while traveling!

Please put that airline or train ticket down for a moment. You need to think about what you are going to wear while you travel on this trip. Yes, I am serious. Do you really want to be that person that boards and people roll their eyes at? I did not think so.

I fly quite often and each time I try to be comfortable and look great at the same time. Trust me when I say this is possible. I have to say I have seen some outfits that make me want to scream. Great examples of this are 50-year-old women in Juicy Couture running suits. Teenage girls showing their mid-drift and shorts that are beyond short. Men in jeans that are dirty and ripped. Boys in shorts that are hanging off their backsides and shirts 5 sizes to big. My favorite is people who show up in pajama pants, flip-flops and hooded sweatshirts. I don’t mean to offend any of you who do this but ARE YOU KIDDING ME???

When did people decide it was acceptable to fly or train in sweats, dirty jeans or clothes that don’t fit them? Am the only person who believes that when traveling you should always look good?

Without a doubt you should look decent when you fly or train. You have paid for the ticket so why not take an extra few minutes to put something nice on. I am not saying to wear a suit or a cocktail dress. But a gentleman could wear jeans, a button down shirt and a blazer. All of these items can be comfortable, wrinkle resistant and breathable. If that is not your style consider jeans, a polo shirt and a nice clean pair of tennis shoes. Women can wear similar outfits. Throw on some great jeans (ones with stretch), a great silk blouse or t-shirt (silk is wrinkle resistant and easily washable) and some driving loafers. Grab a coordinating carry on bag and you are good to go. Not only will you feel great boarding but you will look great when you arrive at your destination.

When you travel be considerate of others and yourself. Showing up looking like a slob never gets you want, nor is it acceptable. Take the time to show yourself the respect you deserve. Now pick up that plane ticket and have an amazing trip.
